CASE STUDY: DIVINE, BENIN

DIVINE

COTONOU, BENIN

Fourteen-month-old Divine plays with her sister, Annicette, while waiting to see a nurse during a visit to the TB clinic. Both girls took part in The Union’s TITI study, an observational study on preventive therapy for children under five years of age who are in close contact with people in treatment for active TB.

The TITI study provided a model for systematic contact tracing and preventive therapy as a way to protect young children from TB. Children under five years of age are particularly susceptible to developing TB and are more difficult to diagnose. Results from the study were presented at the 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health.

At the time of the photo, the girls were beginning their sixth and final month of preventive treatment and had reported no difficulty with the medicines.
